Cranial osteopathy uses cranial rhythm for evaluation. The cranial rhythm is a pulsation that can be felt not just in the cranium but in all parts of the body and is quite distinct from other pulses. This rhythm was first described in the early 1900's by Dr William Gardner Sutherland and is of such small amplitude that it requires a highly developed sense of touch to detect it. The osteopath assesses the quantity and quality of the pulses, which indicates what stresses and strains the body is under. In treatment, it is not just pressure from the osteopath's hands that relieves cranial stiffness, but a combination of specific holding techniques and the body's internal pressure. This stiffness, or lack of motility, can be caused by physical trauma (like being born), muscular tension, psychological stress, and infections.
The immediate effect of treatment on patients differs; some feel relaxed and tired due to the reduction of tension while others feel exhilarated. In my practice cranial osteopathy has been demonstrated to be of benefit for the relief of P.M.T., menopausal symptoms, stress, eczema, M.E. and colic in babies. It has also been found to have a calming affect on epileptics, asthmatics, sleeping problems, and has been used to help autistic children, slow learners, glue ear and hyperactive children.
